Temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ for short, is a hinderance of the hinge joint of your jaw, located directly in front of your ear. This is the joint that allows you to properly open and shut your mouth. When you have TMJ disorder this joint doesn’t work properly, which is a major problem because it’s the most commonly used joint in the body. Symptoms of TMJ disorder include headaches, earaches, jaw locking and clicking noises in the jaw when chewing or talking, and aching jaw and teeth. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms it’s important that you contact your Torrance orofacial specialist as soon as possible. There is no reason to suffer when treatment methods are so easy. Splints, mouth guards, and physical therapy can be used to realign jaws and relieve the pain associated with TMJ disorder.
