Temporomandibular joint disorder, also known as TMJ, is when there is a problem with the temporomandibular joint, which is the hinge joint of your jaw. This joint is located in front of the ear. You can feel this joint move if you place your fingers just in front of your ear while opening and closing your mouth. TMJ disorder is when there are issues with the way this joint functions. Such issues can be problematic. They can put a lot of strain on your jaw, affecting the way you bite, chew and use your jaw to breathe, speak or complete other natural tasks such as yawning. TMJ disorder can also affect your jaw muscles as well. Some of the symptoms of TMJ include headaches, earaches, an aching jaw and even aching teeth. You may even experience a clicking sound when you open or close your mouth. This sound may be the result of a problem with the disc portion of the joint located in your jaw. If this joint does not work correctly, it does not properly prevent the jaw bone from colliding with your skull, causing any of the aforementioned symptoms. Our TMJ specialist here in Torrance, Dr. Paul Grin, DDS, MPH, APC, can provide you with the comprehensive dental examination you need in order to being prescribing any treatment for TMJ.
