TMJ Pain

Still Searching for Relief from Pain?

Living with jaw pain, chronic headaches, or persistent facial and neck pain can be exhausting. Maybe you’ve tried different treatments without finding the relief you need. It’s frustrating when pain interferes with your daily life.

Our practice is different. We focus only on pain conditions from the shoulders up. Our specialists are Board-Certified in Orofacial Pain, a unique expertise shared by fewer than 500 Board-Certified doctors worldwide. We understand these specific types of pain deeply and are always looking for advanced, effective ways to help our patients feel better. We are proud to offer cutting-edge Stem Cell Exosome Therapy, a revolutionary approach in regenerative medicine that holds significant promise for difficult-to-treat orofacial pain conditions.

What Are Stem Cell Exosomes?

Exosomes are tiny, naturally occurring vesicles released by nearly all cells in the body. Although they are very tiny, only about 30 to 150 nanometers in size, their impact is significant. These microscopic “messengers” carry proteins, lipids, and genetic material from one cell to another, playing a key role in cell-to-cell communication. This helps regulate inflammation, support immune responses, and promote tissue repair.

In regenerative medicine, exosomes are often harvested from mesenchymal signaling cells (MSCs) and introduced into another individual through a process known as exosome therapy. Once delivered, the exosomes transfer their contents to the recipient’s cells, helping influence how those cells behave and respond to injury. This makes exosome therapy a promising option for conditions involving inflammation, tissue damage, and chronic pain.

How Exosome Therapy is Performed: Two Main Approaches Based on Your Needs

1. For TMJ problems (jaw pain, clicking, locking): In-office procedure

  • What it is: If your primary concern involves the jaw joint (TMJ), we offer a targeted, non-surgical procedure performed right here in our office under IV sedation.
  • How it works: Exosomes are carefully injected into and around the TMJ area. This ensures that the healing signals reach the tissues that need them most.
  • The Goal: To reduce inflammation, support tissue repair, and improve joint function in a focused, precise way.
  • Optional Boost (Exosomes + PRP): In some cases, we may enhance the treatment by combining exosomes with PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma), which uses your own blood’s healing components for a stronger regenerative effect. Your specialist will help determine if this combination is right for you.

2. For chronic pain, headaches, and general wellness: IV therapy

  • What it is: If you experience widespread or long-standing pain, such as nerve-related (neuropathic) pain, chronic headaches, migraines, or inflammation-related discomfort, exosome therapy can be delivered through an intravenous (IV) infusion.
  • How it works: Exosomes are infused slowly through a small IV line, allowing them to circulate through your bloodstream and reach areas affected by inflammation or cellular imbalance.
  • The Goal: To provide systemic support by calming inflammation, promoting cellular repair, and helping restore comfort and function, especially for chronic conditions affecting the head, face, and neck.

Why Choose Our Specialist Practice?

When considering advanced therapies like exosomes, expertise matters profoundly.

  • Our expertise matters: We are led by a Board-Certified Orofacial Pain specialist focused exclusively on the head, neck, and facial regions.
  • We stay at the forefront of care: We actively incorporate evidence-informed, cutting-edge treatments like stem cell exosomes for patients needing alternative options.
  • We understand complex cases: We specialize in helping patients who have often “tried everything” without success.
  • Your care is never generic: We don’t offer one-size-fits-all solutions. Your treatment plan is based on a thorough diagnosis and understanding of your unique pain condition.

Is Stem Cell Exosome Therapy Right for You?

Exosome therapy may be a promising option if you:

  • Suffer from chronic TMJ disorders unresponsive to conservative care.
  • Experience persistent facial pain, neck pain, chronic headaches, or migraines.
  • Struggle with neuropathic pain in the head or neck region.
  • Are seeking minimally invasive, regenerative approaches to pain management.
  • Have been told there are limited options left for your condition.

A comprehensive evaluation with our Board-Certified Orofacial Pain specialist is essential to determine if you are a suitable candidate for exosome therapy and which approach (local injection or IV infusion) is best suited to your needs.

The Chat in The Waiting Area

A friendly waiting room area at Southbay, TMJ, Headache, and Orofacial Pain Institute is immaculately clean, comfortable, and meant to reduce anxiety and make waiting more pleasant. On a sleek wall-mounted screen, gentle ocean waves roll silently, accompanied by soft, soothing background music. Lauren sits comfortably in one of the leather lounge chairs, positioned across from the receptionist, who is focused on her computer screen. She’s the only patient in the waiting room, thanks to the clinic’s exceptional reputation for running on time.

Lauren takes a deep breath, her hand instinctively resting along her jaw. The pain is all too familiar now. She suffers from chronic TMJ dysfunction that has disrupted her life for far too long. Her attempts to find relief have led her to physical therapy, acupuncture, mouthguards, Botox injections, and multiple chronic pain medication, but nothing has worked. Both her primary care physician and ENT specialist have referred her to this practice and specifically mentioned something called exosome therapy. She has tried researching it, but she’s still confused and conflicted.

Just as Lauren shifts slightly in her seat, the inner door opens with a soft click. A woman steps out, smiling warmly as she thanks the receptionist and schedules her follow-up. She has an easy, relaxed posture—something that has eluded Lauren for far too long. Lauren recognizes her almost instantly.

“Claire?” she calls out, her voice uncertain but hopeful.

The woman turns to face her, her eyes lighting up with surprise. “Lauren? Wow, it’s been forever! I didn’t know you were coming here.”

Lauren offers a tired smile. “Neither did I… until recently. My jaw’s been a mess, I have TMJ. This is kind of my last stop. They mentioned something called Exosome Therapy?” She shrugs slightly. “I don’t know.”

Claire’s expression softens with knowing empathy. “You’re in the right place. I’ve been exactly where you are now.”

She crosses the room and takes the seat beside Lauren, her tone warm and sincere. “I started coming here a few months ago—same issues. My jaw would lock, the pain would shoot up into my temple. I couldn’t eat without pain, couldn’t focus some days. I’d tried everything too.”

Lauren leans in, her curiosity sparked. “So, what did they do?”

“Exosome Therapy,” Claire says, nodding. “They injected exosomes and PRP into my TMJ. It’s not a quick fix, but it’s the first thing that felt like real healing. The inflammation started to settle down, things are less tight. Little by little, I got my life back.”

Lauren frowns slightly, thinking. “I’ve read about exosomes, but it still sounds… futuristic. What even are they?”

Claire smiles. “That’s what I asked, too. From my understanding, the way Dr. Grin explained, exosomes are tiny little messengers your body naturally produces. When harvested from stem cells, they carry powerful signals that reduce inflammation and promote tissue repair. It’s not just about masking pain; it’s helping your body fix what’s broken.”

Lauren nods slowly, processing. “And it worked for you?”

Claire’s eyes meet hers with gentle conviction. “Yes. It didn’t happen overnight, but it happened. The constant ache eased, and the clicking in my jaw is barely there now. I can eat, talk, even sleep without waking up in pain. I came in today just for maintenance—because honestly, I’m not willing to go back to how it used to be.”

A quiet moment passes between them. The soft ocean waves on the screen seem to echo the peace Lauren suddenly feels forming within her.

Claire stands; her bag slung over her shoulder. “You’re doing the right thing by coming here. The care is personal, the staff is amazing, and they actually listen. It’s different.”

Lauren smiles, more genuinely this time. “Thanks, Claire. I needed to hear that.”

As Claire waves goodbye and leaving through the exit door, Lauren’s gaze lingers on the serene screen. Her jaw still aches—but for the first time in a long while, it’s not the only thing she feels. There’s something new quietly taking root: hope for the possibilities ahead along with a small amount of regret for not calling and scheduling an appointment sooner.
